We’re so excited about our partnership with The High Museum of Art’s Basquiat exhibition,
we decided to put out a Basquiat-inspired mixtape series! Each member of our company
has created a playlist that reminds them of the prolific JMB. Here’s Emma Lalor’s:
My attraction to Basquiat’s artwork is deeply rooted in his unapologetic use of colorful chaos. His paintings have a tangible vibrancy that transport me to a crazed, post-apocalyptic, urban atmosphere. The dichotomy of calm and wild found in his artwork is a theme that I connect to regularly when in T. Lang’s creative process. Her choreography pushes me to be out of control, aggressive and ferocious, free to unleash an explosive from within fire while keeping my external cool. I have an emotional connection to both T’s and Basquiat’s desire to play with and expose the relationship between the external and internal, and am thrilled to be a part of this work. The songs in my Basquiat playlist help me get playful and pumped before rehearsal, and I hope you enjoy the mixture of rock, punk, pop, rap, and jazz!
Basquiat Bash is May 6th at The High Museum of Art.
