Thighs of Thunder

T. Lang Dance is creating a new  presentation, “Thighs of Thunder”, a new augmented reality project that merges contemporary dance with generative AI to create a live, immersive cabaret experience.  The piece is an examination of women’s power and an exploration of the societal forces that attempt to control and subvert it.

T. Lang Dance will provide the choreography, the dancers, and the design of the project.  Software imagineers from the University of Arizona's Digital Humanities Lab [under the direction of Dr. Bryan Carter] and Georgia Tech' PoWer Lab [under the direction of Wayne Li] will capture the dancers’ movements through digital scans and create interactive costume, which will then be formatted into an augmented reality format. This format will be used in combination with AI and live dancers during the performances of the completed piece.

“Thighs of Thunder '' takes inspiration from “Thunder, Perfect Mind” (from Nag Hammadi Scriptures), the work of Toni Morrison, and the vaudeville acts of Aida Overton Walker.  It bridges the divide between the sacred and the profane, the rigid binary concept of gender,  the distortion of eroticism, the societal restrictions placed upon women and aiming towards ultimate female freedom.  It opens an internal dialogue both within the viewer and within the larger cultural framework to ask what hidden fears cause society to create structural strictures designed to reduce women’s choices.  Providing models of ethical practices towards women and a deep respect for the female form, this work interrogates empowerment beyond binaries, and asks what richer articulations might exist for female empowerment beyond the framework of binary thinking.
